Choosing your Audience &Â Developing your Evidence
Writing Lesson
This lesson was developed for an in-person setting of students ranging from high advanced to distinguished based on the ACTFL guidelines for English proficiency set in 2012. The lesson was originally taught as part of an entry-level English Composition and Rhetoric class at Colorado State University. The majority of students in this course are native speakers; however, there are frequently non-native speakers with the aforementioned proficiency level who enroll in the course, as well. This lesson, in particular, was instructed to a class that included three non-native speakers originating from China, Vietnam, and Thailand, respectively. The lesson was evaluated by an adjunct faculty member working in the Composition department; however, this individual also graduated from the TEFL/TESL department at CSU and therefore, possesses knowledge pertaining to ESL/EFL instruction, as well.
Lesson Materials
This lesson focuses on the theme of audience and development in writing. In particular, the lesson covers how to identify a logical audience for an argumentative paper, as well as how to develop paragraphs in this genre in a 60-minute lesson. The Stakeholder Matrix assignment served as the homework assignment completed by the students prior to this lesson and is used during one of the in-class activities.
