Reading and Writing Lesson
This reading and writing lesson specifically focuses on instructing students from an amalgamation of different countries (e.g., Brazil, China, Vietnam, and Japan) of various learner levels via Zoom. The content of this lesson involves learning how to describe food; understanding cooking terminology; writing recipes from their home countries.
Lesson Materials
This lesson involves having students participate in a variety of different types of tasks to promote student learning and retention of the covered content. These tasks range from full class discussions to standard group work; however, the tasks themselves have been designed in such a way that students have the ability to interact with various mediums and in various settings. The class begins with the listed warm-up activity that asks students to retrieve a handout posted on their Google classroom and participate in the full class discussion by describing the food present in the slides. The students were encouraged to participate by unmuting themselves and/or typing their responses in the chat box on Zoom.
Lesson Activities
The cooking verbs handout was used in the first activity and students were asked to review the handout to participate. The handout served as the point of reference for the different terms, which were projected on the slide and associated with pictures. As the activity progressed, the terms were eliminated, and students were asked to quickly name the term associated with the picture on the slide. In activity two, the students were asked to collaborate in their breakout rooms to complete this handout by writing a single instructional sentence for the recipe on a Google drive document. In activity three, students were separated based on country of origin. Once in their designated breakout room, the students were asked to compose a recipe from their home country on Google docs to present to the rest of class.
